What Really Is Darkness?

We are coming up on Chanukah. It begins this evening as a matter of fact. I am sure most of you are aware of this and in fact, some of you may even light your menorah’s at home. Chanukah begins at Sundown — as does every day of the year on the Jewish calendar. Every new week begins in darkness; every new month, every new year.

In our main stream US culture where we are used to deriving meaning from our employment — a doing culture on the doing versus being continuum — it is difficult for many people to think of the beginning of something as the darkness — that sleepy do nothing time. How could that be…
